Dusty May is not looking to pull a Rick Pitino in the NBA.
The new Dallas Mavericks head coach May spoke this week to CJ Moore of The Athletic. During the interview, May was asked if he would ever consider a return to coaching in the college ranks.
“I hope not, because that would mean I did sh—y here,” replied May. “I’d like to win and stay.”

The 49-year-old May was one of the greatest college basketball coaches of the 2020s. He first rose to prominence as the head coach of Florida Atlantic, becoming the program’s all-time winningest coach and also leading the Owls to a stunning Final Four appearance in the 2023 NCAA Tournament. May then made the leap to Michigan in 2024, leading the Wolverines to a Sweet Sixteen berth in his first season in charge and then guiding the program last season to their first NCAA national championship since way back in 1989.
But May left Michigan this past June to become Jason Kidd’s successor as the head coach of the Mavericks and is now very much focused on the long-term picture in Dallas. The Mavericks have also since added some notable ex-Michigan figures to help ease May’s transition.
