Gianna Bryant has jersey retired by middle school
Harbor Day School honored Gianna Bryant on Wednesday night with a jersey retirement ceremony.
The school held a ceremony in their basketball gym to retire the 13-year-old’s No. 2 jersey.
Vanessa Bryant posted videos from the ceremony to Instagram. The videos showed various people speaking about Gigi. Members of the student council spoke about Gigi and talked about her strengths as a person and what she was working towards in the council. One of the late youngster’s teachers spoke and praised Gianna for her positive outlook. A basketball coach spoke and praised Gigi for her fierce attitude and having the “Mamba Mentality”.
Bryant was honored as both a student and athlete. Her 8th grade basketball team also was part of the ceremony.
Gianna was among nine people who died in a helicopter crash on Sunday, January 26 that also killed her father, Kobe. Gianna played basketball and aspired to play for UConn, which honored her with her own jersey last week. Kobe praised Gianna for her basketball ability and said she was better at the sport at her age than he was.
Kobe and Gianna are survived by mother/wife Vanessa, and daughters/sisters Natalia, Bianka and Capri.
