Lakers have interesting focus for JJ Redick as head coach
The Los Angeles Lakers made it very clear what they see in JJ Redick when introducing him to the media on Monday.
Redick was officially announced as the Lakers’ new head coach with a press conference that also included general manager Rob Pelinka. Pelinka set the tone early by saying that, under Redick, the organization is looking to establish a “new and unique approach to Lakers excellence” through player development.

That was quite clear to Redick as well. He said his primary motivation for the job was to help develop players and act in service to them.

The comments certainly suggest that the Lakers are going to try to build from within a bit more in the coming years. That is obviously highly unusual for a LeBron James team, but the approach of complementing James and Anthony Davis with high-profile veterans has not worked in the last couple years. It is also telling that one of the Lakers’ younger players absolutely raved about Redick recently.
Redick’s lack of experience will remain a question. If he struggles at first, it will be interesting to see how much patience the Lakers give him.
