Lance Stephenson needs groin surgery, out indefinitely
Anthony Davis’ supporting cast is officially down to skin and bones.
The New Orleans Pelicans announced on Saturday that swingman Lance Stephenson has been diagnosed with a groin injury that will require surgery. There is currently no timetable for his return.
The 26-year-old Stephenson had managed 9.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game in the team’s first six contests of the season. He signed a one-year deal with New Orleans for the league minimum in September.
Already without Tyreke Evans and Jrue Holiday, the Pelicans are now also down one of their only remaining manufacturers of offense outside of Davis. Even if Stephenson’s contract comes with just $100,000 in guaranteed money, that still hurts for a New Orleans team currently second-worst in the league in offensive efficiency (per ESPN). Opening 2016-17 with an 0-6 record after going 30-52 last season, another miserable year may unfortunately be in store for The Big Easy.
