LeBron James may have his eye on specific media role after retirement

LeBron James will undoubtedly be pursued by every major television network and streaming service when he decides he is done playing in the NBA, but the four-time champion may already have his eye on a specific role.

James could eventually join Prime Video’s coverage of the NBA, according to Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports. McCarthy noted that LeBron has a growing business relationship with Amazon, which became even more evident recently when the Los Angeles Lakers star appeared in a commercial for Prime Day.

Prime Day will be held from July 8-11 this year. James filmed an ad spot for Amazon that was released earlier this week and made reference to his retirement with the tagline “what’s next?”

There are plenty of other reasons to believe James could join Prime Video if he eventually decides to work in media. LeBron has been critical in the past of analysts who work for ESPN and TNT, accusing them of being too negative about today’s NBA. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he gushed about the panel that Amazon has put together.

“I think Amazon Prime Video, they’re going to do a great job showcasing our sport; (the analysts) love our sport. Great intellect, great commentary, great insight — I really look forward to that. And like I said, those guys that have signed up for it, they’re going to do great things,” James said.

Dwyane Wade, who is LeBron’s close friend and former teammate, is part of Prime Video’s NBA coverage along with Steve Nash, Dirk Nowitzki and Candace Parker. James and Nash host a podcast together called “Mind the Game,” which is carried on Wondery. McCarthy points out that Wondery is owned by Amazon Music.

ESPN will likely pursue LeBron, but the four-time NBA MVP’s poor relationship with Stephen A. Smith might stand in the way of any potential partnership.

If James does eventually want to become an analyst, there is a good chance he will be able to name his price. LeBron’s existing ties to Amazon could play a big role in where he ends up.
