Guard Marcus Smart agreed to a buyout with the Washington Wizards and intends to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers, and that move is particularly stinging to fans of the Boston Celtics.
Smart is signing a two-year, $11 million deal with the Lakers, according to Shams Charania of ESPN. The Phoenix Suns and Milwaukee Bucks also pursued Smart before he decided to join the Lakers.
One team that was not among the finalists is the Celtics, where Smart spent the first nine seasons of his career. The guard remains a fan favorite in Boston, and Celtics fans were very unhappy to see Smart heading to the team’s archrivals.

Yeah, that’s a brutal one for us Celtics fans. Marcus Smart was the heart and soul of Boston for nearly a decade…

Grit, defense, hustle, and that unfiltered fire.

Marcus Smart
Why do all of my favorite Celtics guards wind up wearing the purple and gold?! https://t.co/HPiNlWuywR
Smart was the anchor of Boston’s defense for much of his career, and even won Defensive Player of the Year honors in 2021-22. The Celtics ultimately traded him in the deal that brought Kristaps Porzingis to Boston, and he has since struggled with injury issues.
There were some rumors that the Celtics might look into bringing Smart back this offseason. Boston fans got their hopes up, only to see him sign with the Lakers. That one definitely hurts.
