The 2019-20 NBA season may have just started, but we could already have a frontrunner for the strangest injury of the year.
Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart told reporters after Wednesday’s season opener against the Philadelphia 76ers that he strained his windpipe when he got hit in the throat during the 107-94 loss. Jay King of The Athletic noted that Smart’s voice sounded “crazy” during the postgame.
Smart finished with a customary line of four points, four rebounds, and eight assists in the defeat, but as one of the most vocal and emotional players in the league, the injury may force him to take it easy on his throat the next few days.
Granted, the 25-year-old is no stranger to bizarre injuries, especially given the way that he got hurt a couple seasons ago.
