Report: NBA asking players to take 50 percent pay cut in mid-April

Adam Silver

The financial ramifications of the NBA’s coronavirus shutdown are beginning to come into play.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, the NBA has asked the NBPA that players take a 50 percent pay cut starting April 15. The players’ union has countered with a proposed 25 percent pay reduction in mid-May.

To date, NBA players have been receiving their full salaries. With games nowhere in sight and a major reduction in revenues coming as a result, a fight like this was inevitable. It’s also not clear what the resolution would be. For obvious reasons, the union will want to hold off on giving up salaries as long as possible, and give away as little as possible.

Some players have already taken a pay cut, but nowhere near as big as the one the league is requesting. It’s further evidence that this is going to be an unpleasant situation for everyone.
