One of the reasons that the NBA wants to find a way to open practice facilities to players is so they can better monitor the workouts. That, apparently, is because some players are practicing off the grid.
According to Sam Amick and Joe Vardon of The Athletic, some NBA players are secretly practicing at gyms that are supposed to be closed during the coronavirus pandemic. Part of this is due to the fact that many players do not have access to a home gym and must find alternative arrangements if they want to stay in shape.
“It’s just safer to have them in our gym, instead of random gyms all over the place,” said one NBA assistant coach.
This is likely a motivator behind the NBA’s recent proposed plans to let practice facilities open on a limited basis as long as state governments allow it. This plan has been met with some pushback, and understandably so. Safety is the priority, but this just doesn’t sound entirely safe as it stands.
