NBC admits to glaring error in final seconds of Knicks-Hawks Game 2

NBC scorebug showing an extra Knicks timeout in Game 2 loss to Hawks

New York Knicks head coach Mike Brown may have some choice words ready for whoever’s in charge of NBC’s scorebug.

Brown was universally panned for not calling a timeout in the final seconds of Game 2 of the Knicks’ first-round series against the Atlanta Hawks. The Knicks lost the contest 107-106 after Mikal Bridges missed a potential game-winning shot at Madison Square Garden in Manhattan, N.Y.

New York went the length of the floor to get Bridges the shot following a missed free throw from Atlanta (video here).

NBC clarified that the broadcast scorebug had erroneously indicated the Knicks had a timeout during the final play of the game.

“We just want to say that the scoreboard showed a timeout that the Knicks did not have on the final play,” Maria Taylor said to open the halftime show of Minnesota Timberwolves-Denver Nuggets Game 2.

“Due to a data issue, the wrong timeout information was communicated. So, that’s why you see a timeout on the scorebug.”

The Knicks had 5.6 seconds on the clock when Hawks guard CJ McCollum missed his two free throws, leading to Bridges’ missed baseline jumper.

A timeout would have allowed Brown to draw up a play for Jalen Brunson, who finished with a game-high 29 points for New York.

The Knicks were firmly in control entering the fourth quarter, holding a 12-point lead to begin the final period. The Hawks slowly chipped away at the lead and went ahead late in front of a stunned MSG crowd.
