Report: Noah Syndergaard expected to be out three months

The New York Mets could have a major hole to fill in their starting rotation for roughly half of the regular season, as Noah Syndergaard is not expected to return any time soon from the torn lat muscle he recently suffered.

Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported on Wednesday that Syndergaard was flying to Los Angeles to get a second opinion on the injury, but early estimates are that the righthander could miss around three months.

The Mets have to be frustrated with the Syndergaard situation, as there’s no telling whether the 24-year-old made his injury worse by refusing an MRI. He had an issue with his biceps last week and was scratched from a start, but he insisted he knows his own body and didn’t need an exam. On Sunday, Syndergaard couldn’t even pitch two innings before he had to leave the game with discomfort. He eventually agreed to an MRI, which revealed a torn muscle.

Syndergaard wrote a note to Mets fans on Monday explaining how tough it is to not be able to take the mound. It sounds like that is something he is going to have to deal with for quite some time.
