The Dallas Mavericks are fully committed to their guy.

Dallas announced in a post to social media on Tuesday that they have officially agreed to a contract extension with head coach Jason Kidd. The team’s release noted that Kidd is getting a new “multi-year” extension.

Kidd, 52, has served as Mavericks head coach since 2021. Over that span, he has gone 382-179 (.546) and also led the team to the NBA Finals during the 2023-24 season.

But there was recently some uncertainty over Kidd’s future in Dallas. With a reported two years still remaining on his previous contract, Kidd drew strong interest from the New York Knicks over the summer after the Knicks fired head coach Tom Thibodeau. There were even signs that the interest was very much mutual on Kidd’s part.

That said, the Mavericks blocked the Knicks’ efforts to interview Kidd, and the Knicks then ended up hiring Mike Brown as their new head coach instead. While Kidd could have still foreseeably forced his way to New York if he really wanted that job, his new contract extension puts to rest all of the speculation over his longer-term future.

With Kidd now apparently signed through at least the 2028-29 NBA season, he will have a lot of leeway to shape the Mavericks in their post-Luka Doncic era. Namely, Kidd will be tasked with developing No. 1 overall draft pick Cooper Flagg, whom he already has a very interesting plan for.
