The Indiana Pacers are taking a flier on a previously retired hometown kid.

Virginia Cavaliers legend Kyle Guy drummed up some buzz last week when he was seen dominating a pickup game. Guy, who had been serving as an assistant coach for the University of Nevada, was in his native Indiana for a recruiting trip.

The former NCAA champion suited up for a rec league team against a squad of local players. Guy did not look like a guy who’s done playing, to say the least.

The clip went viral on social media and helped get Guy on the Pacers’ radar. The team signed Guy to an Exhibit 10 contract a week after his highlight reel turned heads.

The injury to Tyrese Haliburton altered the Pacers’ trajectory heading into next season. With the team needing backcourt depth, Guy has a chance to show Indiana that he’s their guy.

Guy started his career with the Sacramento Kings in 2019 and later had a brief stint with the Miami Heat, who signed Guy to a pair of 10-day contracts during the 2021-22 season. He has not played in an NBA game since then. He averaged 3.1 points, 1.0 rebounds, and 0.9 assists across 53 career games.

The 28-year-old later played a couple of seasons in Europe, suiting up for Greek squad Panathinaikos and Spanish teams La Laguna Tenerife and Joventut Badalona.

Guy was born and raised in Indiana and was even named the state’s Mr. Basketball during his high school playing days. The Exhibit 10 contract Guy signed allows him to play for the Pacers’ G League affiliate, the Noblesville Boom.
