Russell Westbrook’s 18-year NBA career ended when he announced his retirement in the 2026 offseason.
Yet, his accolades are impressive, and New Orleans Pelicans star Dejounte Murray even said Westbrook is the greatest point guard of all time.
Murray quoted Westbrook’s retirement video at the time by saying, “GREATEST POINT GUARD EVER.”
Recently, Murray revealed why he called Westbrook the GOAT PG in an interview with Tomer Azarly of ClutchPoints.
“And when it comes to my opinion as him being the greatest point guard ever, it’s like, I mean, not only the stats shows it, and I’m bigger than just a stats guy,” Murray said. “…And I love Magic Johnson. I love John Stockton and Isaiah Thomas. All them old school guys, but just who Russ was and what he’s done I think just on and off is just you can’t do that again, you can’t script that.”
Westbrook’s resume speaks for itself. He has nine All-Star appearances, is a two-time scoring champion and a one-time NBA MVP winner. He is also the all-time leader in career triple-doubles, and he averaged a triple-double in four seasons.
Kendrick Perkins, who played with Westbrook as a member of the Oklahoma City Thunder, said the PG should have a statue and his jersey retired in Oklahoma City.
While Magic Johnson, John Stockton and Stephen Curry are widely in the GOAT point guard conversation, Murray didn’t hesitate to put Russell Westbrook in that category.
