Golden State Warriors fans can likely breathe a sigh of relief with Steph Curry.
The Warriors superstar guard Curry has “mutual interest” with the team in signing a new contract extension, Shams Charania of ESPN reported on Monday. Charania says that Curry understands the Warriors are at a “crossroads” right now and would still be willing to discuss an extension with them regardless.
This comes on the heels of a report earlier this week suggesting that Curry could potentially play some hardball with Golden State. Curry can become a free agent in 2027, and the thought was that he might use his uncertain contract status as leverage to force the Warriors to build a strong team around him.
Set to turn 39 years old next March, Curry will be entering the final year of his contract next season at $62.6 million. He officially becomes eligible for a new extension with the Warriors in August.
Curry is still very much worth the investment given his production (26.6 points and 4.7 assists per game last season) and his status as an all-time franchise legend who is a major draw for other superstars to come and play with. But Curry does have some injury concerns quickly creeping up on him as he appeared in just 43 games last season because of a persistent knee issue.
The Warriors have done their best to stay competitive around Curry but failed in their pursuits of LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Anthony Davis, Kawhi Leonard, and others in recent seasons. Making matters worse is that the one star acquisition that Golden State did manage to pull off was Jimmy Butler, who tore his ACL just 68 games into his Warriors tenure.
Still, it sounds like there is a mutual understanding between Curry and the Warriors that they would like to continue their partnership beyond next season. As for what kind of extension Curry might potentially be in line for, we have an idea of that much as well.
