Suns reportedly targeting Jay Wright for head coaching job

Jay Wright

The Phoenix Suns apparently want to tip into the college ranks for their next head coach, and are reportedly eyeing the newly-minted national champion.

Villanova head coach Jay Wright is reportedly the Suns’ number one choice to fill their head coaching vacancy.

It makes sense for the Suns to go after a big name coach like Wright, but it’s really difficult to see him leaving. He’s from southeast Pennsylvania, he’s married to a former Villanova cheerleader, and he’s now untouchable at that university. Why would he leave?

Ultimately, college coaches who win championships will probably get linked to pro jobs that they rarely, if ever, end up taking. It happens to one prominent college coach all the time. Billy Donovan is the exception to that rule, but he was also offered a great situation in Oklahoma City where he could coach an immediate title contender. So congratulations, Coach Wright, and welcome to the club.
