Surprising report emerges about Draymond Green’s future

Draymond Green might stunningly be in his final days as a member of the Golden State Warriors.

The Golden State Warriors could potentially trade away their longtime forward Green as part of a package to the Milwaukee Bucks for Giannis Antetokounmpo, Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area reported on Saturday. Poole notes that the Warriors do not want to trade Green but that such a move is “not inconceivable.”

This was also corroborated by veteran NBA writer Marc Stein, who wrote to Substack on Saturday that Golden State is unlikely to include Jimmy Butler as part of their package for Antetokounmpo. As such, Stein indicates that the Warriors would almost have to include Green in the package at that point for salary-match purposes.

It goes without saying that Green, 35, is a big identity piece for the Warriors and is often described as the heart and soul of their team. He has been with Golden State since his NBA career began in 2012, serving as an irreplaceable member of their four championship teams since 2015. Green has also made four All-Star teams, secured two All-NBA nods, won a Defensive Player of the Year Award, and been a very trusted sidekick to Steph Curry throughout that entire span.

But Green is clearly on the back-nine of his career at this point and is averaging 8.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game this season on 42/32/70 shooting splits. He is making $25.9 million this year and has a $27.7 million player option for 2026-27.

A trade for Antetokounmpo ahead of the Feb. 5 deadline would obviously be able to make up for Green’s defensive and playmaking skills (and then some). The Warriors have also been described as a frontrunner of sorts to land the former MVP Antetokounmpo. But that would still mark a stunning and abrupt potential ending to Green’s time in the Bay Area after 13-and-a-half illustrious seasons there.
