The New York Knicks on Tuesday made a stunning decision regarding the future of head coach Tom Thibodeau.

The Knicks are firing Thibodeau after five seasons, according to Shams Charania of ESPN. Charania added that the Knicks believe a new voice is needed for the team to make the next step toward winning an NBA title.

The Knicks are singularly focused on their pursuit of a championship and believe a new voice will serve as the focus for the organization's next step, sources said. After five seasons with the Knicks, Tom Thibodeau is out as head coach. https://t.co/OmVzLwKEvY

In a statement, Knicks president Leon Rose thanked Thibodeau for his contributions, but said the change was made to further the Knicks’ singular focus “on winning a championship for our fans.”

The abrupt decision comes as a major shock. Earlier this week, it was reported that Thibodeau retained the backing of team president Leon Rose and was likely to be back. Star guard Jalen Brunson gave him a strong public endorsement after the Knicks fell to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Thibodeau has undoubtedly been a success as Knicks coach. He went 226-174 in five seasons and made the playoffs four times. However, the team was never able to get over the hump, though they came closest this year by losing to Indiana in six games in the East Finals.

Thibodeau was subjected to the usual criticisms he faces, most notably about the heavy workload he demands from his starters. At least one of his players seemingly chafed a bit under those demands this season.

The Knicks opening figures to attract big-name coaches, as it is an iconic franchise in a huge market with a team ready to contend for a title now. It remains to be seen who the organization decides to target to try and take them to the next level.
