Zach Edey has not been having a fun last couple of months.

The Memphis Grizzlies center Edey has been charged with reckless driving stemming from an incident that occurred last month in the state of Indiana. Ron Wilkins of the Lafayette Journal & Courier reported Wednesday that Edey was stopped by police on May 1 on Indiana 25 in southern Tippecanoe County. Police say that Edey, who was traveling northbound in a Kia Sorento, was doing 101 mph in a 55-mph zone.

Edey had an initial hearing on Monday morning in Tippecanoe Superior Court on the reckless driving charge, which is a misdemeanor. The 7-foot-4 center reportedly told police that he was speeding because he was attempting to pass another vehicle.

You can read Wilkins’ full report on the situation here.

The former National College Player of the Year Edey has ties to the Indiana area. He played four years of college ball in the state for Purdue University. Meanwhile, the Grizzlies were eliminated from the playoffs by the Oklahoma City Thunder on Apr. 26, five days before Edey’s traffic incident.

As a rookie for Memphis, Edey averaged 9.2 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks in 21.5 minutes per game over 66 appearances (including 55 starts). However, Edey suffered a bad break earlier this month as he sprained his ankle while working out. Edey had surgery on the ankle as a result and is now expected to miss the start of the 2025-26 NBA season. On top of that, Edey is dealing with a legal issue as well in the form of a reckless driving charge.
