Floyd Mayweather says he will stand ‘toe to toe’ with Conor McGregor

Floyd Mayweather Jr is one of the best defensive fighters of all time, and that is one of the main reasons most people feel Conor McGregor has no chance against him. But what happens if Mayweather strays away from his typical fighting style?

Mayweather, who is looking to improve to a perfect 50-0 for his career, says his footwork is not what it used to be. Because of that, he insists he is not going to spend the entire Aug. 26 fight dancing around McGregor.

“He really wants to win bad, extremely bad. With other fighters, it plays out two ways when you’re facing Floyd Mayweather. You’ve got some guys that play it safe,” Mayweather explained, via BoxingScene.com. “You’ve got some guys like Maidana that go straight for the kill. He’s going to come out and go for the kill like Mayweather-Maidana I. He’s going to come out and go for the kill. He’s a heavy hitter, so I’ve got to be cautious. Remember, I’m older, so I can’t move like I used to move, so it’s basically going to be a toe-to-toe battle.”

Is Mayweather trying to say he’s going to trade haymakers for a change? We’ll believe it when we see it.

“He’s upset,” Mayweather said of McGregor. “I’ve seen it before. When these fighters get upset with me, they come out like they’re going to try and kill me. My job is to do what I do, just keep my composure.”

McGregor isn’t a boxer, so the last thing Mayweather should be thinking about is trading blows. The only way McGregor can win is if he knocks Mayweather out relatively early on. No matter how many jerseys McGregor wears to troll him, Mayweather needs to resist the urge to stray away from what has worked for him over a 49-fight career.

In reality, Mayweather is just trying to build as much anticipation as possible for the bout. He’s not going to suddenly start fighting like Mike Tyson.
