Avery Johnson meets with Alabama over coaching vacancy

Avery Johnson

Alabama may have its eye on a former NBA Coach of the Year to fill its basketball coaching vacancy.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Goodman, former Dallas Mavericks coach Avery Johnson is meeting with Bama Saturday night.

Bama fired Anthony Grant in March after he failed to live up their expectations following six seasons on the job. The Tide pursued Gregg Marshall, but he elected to remain at Wichita State after receiving a massive pay raise from the Shockers.

Johnson played in the league for 16 seasons, most notably winning a championship with the Spurs in 1999. He coached the Mavericks for four seasons and took them to the NBA Finals in 2006. He also coached the Nets but was fired in 2013 during his third season.

Johnson does not have experience as a college head coach, so there would be a big question about how well he could recruit, which is a huge component of the job.
