NCAA won’t allow Virginia’s Kyle Guy to accept wedding registry gifts
Virginia Cavaliers guard Kyle Guy is happily engaged and soon-to-be married. There are many people who want to give him and his fiancee wedding gifts and contribute to their future, but that is on hold for now due to an unlikely reason: the NCAA.
Guy told reporters on Thursday that he cannot accept gifts through a wedding registry because it would violate NCAA rules.

“Yeah, that was crazy to me that that’s illegal, because that’s what a registry’s for,” Guy said. “NCAA said it was illegal, so I’m not going to argue with it right now.”
Guy and his fiancee Alexa Jenkins appeared to have had a Crate and Barrel registry that is now closed. The two are set to get married in Kauai in July.
The NCAA has strict rules about players accepting gifts, even if the intention here seems to be pure. Their thinking is that this could open up an avenue for illegal payments after all.
As ridiculous as this sounds, we’ve seen the NCAA go after much more from an amateur athlete.
Guy’s season will be over soon enough. Virginia plays in the Final Four on Saturday and potentially the championship game on Monday. Guy is averaging 15.2 points per game this season.
