Referees let controversial UCF basket stand after lengthy rim review

UCF Duke rim

Duke narrowly avoided defeat against UCF in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday in what was the game of the tournament so far.

The Blue Devils won 77-76 after the Knights barely missed two shots on the final possession. Prior to that, a controversial video replay took center stage.

UCF was up 72-70 with just over two minutes to go in the game when BJ Taylor threw up a shot in an attempt to beat the shot clock. UCF’s Aubrey Dawkins grabbed the rebound and threw up a pass (or missed shot) to Tacko Fall, who dunked to give UCF a 74-70 lead. But there was a big question about whether or not Taylor’s shot hit the rim. If it didn’t, the shot clock would have expired and UCF’s basket would have been reversed.

Different angles appeared to show different things, which means the video was inconclusive. Because of that, the referees decided not to change the call on the floor and let the basket stand.

Thanks to a Cam Reddish 3-pointer, Zion Williamson bucket and foul, and RJ Barrett’s putback, Duke was able to come back and take the lead and win. But boy, was that one incredible ending.
