Arch Manning put his body on the line Saturday against Mississippi State and eventually paid the price.
The Texas quarterback led the Longhorns to a furious comeback, forcing overtime against the Bulldogs at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville, Miss. But Manning hurt himself when he rushed for 13 yards on the first overtime play.
Mississippi State safety Isaac Smith tried to grab Manning’s leg to pull him down. Defensive lineman Kedrick Bingley-Jones delivered the decisive tackle, which also sent Manning’s head crashing onto the ground.

Texas medical staff attended to Manning, who looked like he had suffered a concussion or at least needed to enter the protocol. He was later taken into the medical tent and did not return to the contest. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian did not yet have an update on Manning’s status during his postgame press conference.
There was nothing to return to anyway, as backup Texas QB Matthew Caldwell finished the job with the game-winning touchdown a few plays later. Mississippi State was unable to match it, as the Longhorns won 45-38.

Texas trailed 38-21 with under 10 minutes remaining in the contest. Manning stepped up down the stretch to throw two touchdowns to eventually force overtime. He also got some help from Ryan Niblett, who looked like prime David Hester on a critical 79-yard punt return touchdown following the two-minute timeout.
