Bill Belichick’s college coaching career has started off with a whimper.
North Carolina opened up their season on Monday against TCU at Kenan Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C. The game marked Belichick’s official Tar Heels head coaching debut after he signed a five-year contract with them last December.
Unfortunately for Belichick though, the game could not have gone much worse. After a first-quarter touchdown run by running back Caleb Hood gave UNC a 7-0 lead, it was all TCU from there.
The Horned Frogs ended up piling on seven scores unanswered (five touchdowns and two field goals) to take a 41-7 lead over the Tar Heels midway through the third quarter. They eventually went on to beat UNC by a 48-14 final.
The horrific debut led to Belichick getting the brutal meme treatment over social media. Take a look at some of the most ruthless jokes that resulted (with many of them referencing Jordon Hudson, Tom Brady, and others).

Belichick was always going to have an adjustment period to the college game, especially with a UNC team that went 6-7 last season and that had their last bowl-game win during the 2019 campaign. But there are obviously lofty expectations that come right out of the gate with being a six-time Super Bowl champion head coach. Considering how many big-name celebrities came out to attend Belichick’s debut at Chapel Hill as well, it is safe to say that Belichick and the Tar Heels got humbled in a major way to kick off their season.
