Dolores Lozano, the former Baylor student who accused a former Baylor football player of assaulting her on multiple occasions, reportedly did not cooperate with police when the alleged incidents took place more than two years ago.
According to KWTX, Waco Police say Lozano told them in April 2014 that former Bears running back Devin Chafin choked and slammed her into the ground in March 2014. She said she had not told anyone about the incident prior to that and refused a protective order. Police also say Lozano refused to allow them to take photos of her injuries and stopped cooperating with their investigation.
When she came forward to college football reporter Joe Schad on Tuesday, Lozano said she told Baylor assistant coach Jeff Lebby — who is still with the team — about the alleged assaults and that he essentially did nothing. Chafin denied the allegations to KWTX but claims Lebby made him do extra work in the weight room after speaking with Lozano. Chafin also says former Baylor coach Art Briles knew nothing of Lozano’s claims.
It’s unclear why Lozano stopped cooperating with the police, though she did say Chafin’s mother urged her to not go to the authorities. What is perhaps a bigger character concern for Lozano is the piece she wrote for ESPN 97.5FM in Houston back in February ripping Jamie Naughright, the former Tennessee trainer who accused Peyton Manning of sexual assault.
“It is likely her allegations were made to cover up her promiscuity and collect some cash,” Lozano wrote. “On top of the lawsuits with the Manning family, Naughright sued Donna Karan over an ‘overly aggressive’ massage in the fashion designer’s bedroom. I’m not saying she’s a gold digger, but I see a pattern of lawsuits from the doctor. Maybe she can help Kanye get out of debt?”
None of this excuses anything that went on under the Baylor administration’s watch. The university’s former president still made himself look ridiculous in this interview, and there are several other incidents that an independent study revealed were covered up by school officials.
That said, Lozano probably should have been more careful hurling accusations at Naughright. Blaming the alleged victim is always a dangerous game. Lozano may soon find herself on the other end of that finger-pointing.
