Monday was not a great day for Mike Norvell’s hopes of continued employment with the Florida State Seminoles.
Florida State announced Monday that athletic director Michael Alford has been fired. While Alford did not hire Norvell, the former athletic director was a staunch supporter of the embattled head coach.
Florida State board of trustees chairman Peter Collins tried to give Norvell a vote of confidence on Monday by saying the coach was retained for this season for a reason. However, his comments probably will not give Norvell a lot of long-term encouragement.
“It’s kind of tough after two games to just say, ‘Yeah, we don’t see it,'” Collins said of potentially firing Norvell, via Matt Baker of The Athletic.
Norvell was already firmly on the hot seat before Alford was fired. The Seminoles are 1-1 and put up a spirited fight in a home loss to SMU last week, but Norvell is still just 39-35 as Florida State’s head coach. The team went 5-7 last year, but the school kept him anyway, perhaps in part because firing him would have been a very expensive proposition.
Florida State faces Alabama next Saturday, a team they managed to upset last season. If the Crimson Tide blow them out, the calls for Norvell to go will get even louder.
