Jake Retzlaff has unique way of bypassing the transfer portal

Quarterback Jake Retzlaff is leaving BYU, but he does not have to use the transfer portal in order to do so.

Retzlaff confirmed Friday that, due to impending punishment from the school, he will be withdrawing from BYU. He confirmed that he intends to play elsewhere, stating that “my journey is far from over.”

Retzlaff’s decision to leave was prompted by an accusation of sexual assault. The quarterback denied the allegation, but in doing so, he did admit to having consensual sex, which runs counter to BYU’s honor code. As a result, the university planned to suspend him for seven games next season.

By simply withdrawing from BYU, Retzlaff is not subject to the restrictions of the transfer portal, and can enroll at any school he wants whenever he wants to. Since his suspension was to be issued by the university and not the NCAA, he will not face a suspension at his next school, and will be able to play immediately.

Retzlaff had a breakout season for BYU in 2024. He threw for 2,947 yards with 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions, and led the Cougars to an 11-2 record and a win in the Alamo Bowl.
