Virginia Tech will hire Memphis’s Justin Fuente to replace the retiring Frank Beamer, according to multiple reports.
Fox 5 News’s Brody Logan was the first to report the hire, with Bud Foster remaining as defensive coordinator. ESPN’s Brett McMurphy also reported that Shane Beamer will remain on the Hokies coaching staff.
Fuente established himself as one of the nation’s brighter young coaches at Memphis, going 26-23 in four seasons. He turned them into a ten win team in 2014, winning the AAC title and a bowl game. His Tigers posted another 9-3 campaign this season. The 39-year-old was a 2014 finalist for the Eddie Robinson Coach of the Year award. He’ll have big shoes to fill taking over for Beamer, who has coached Virginia Tech since 1987.
