Kansas State wide receiver Jayce Brown came very close to making an inexcusable mistake during Saturday’s rivalry game against the Kansas Jayhawks.
Brown caught a 78-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter of Saturday’s game at David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium in Lawrence, Kan., and tried to showboat a bit at the goal line. The receiver ran parallel to the plane of the goal line for a few seconds, holding the ball out in celebration.
Kansas safety Lyrik Rawls eventually got back and knocked the ball out of Brown’s hand, but Brown had taken the ball across the plane of the goal, albeit narrowly. The touchdown counted.

The ball is definitely across the line, as Brown’s foot is on the white line at one point while he is running with it. However, that was way too close for comfort, and one can expect the Wildcats coaching staff will be having a word with him about cutting it a bit too close in the future.
There has been an epidemic at the NFL level of players celebrating too soon and losing the ball before making it to the end zone this season. The last thing college coaches will want is for that to be emulated by their players.
The Wildcats went on to a 42-17 win.
