Report: Miami taking ‘fresh look’ at Butch Davis for coaching vacancy

butch-davis-uncThe Miami Hurricanes are pondering bringing Butch Davis back as head coach, according to a report.

Sources told the Miami Herald that the school is taking a “fresh look” at Davis and are “evaluating his viability as a candidate.”

The stumbling block is the academic scandal that rocked North Carolina while Davis was coach there. While Davis was never implicated by the NCAA, North Carolina made him the fall guy and fired him in 2011. No team has hired him since.

One member of the school’s Board of Trustees says there is “pressure being placed by the public and some of the Trustees to hire him,” with Davis said to “badly” want the job.

The process is still very early on, though, according to the Herald, with “more than a dozen others” said to be getting early consideration. Charlie Strong and Tommy Tuberville are both reportedly interested in the job, and Greg Schiano and Rob Chudzinski are also being looked at by the school.

Davis would be a popular choice among the fans, though. He coached the team from 1995 to 2000 and posted a 51-20 record, building a program that contended for multiple national titles both during and after his tenure.
