Todd Graham admits to stealing signals but says it’s not illegal
Todd Graham on Tuesday responded to accusations of sign stealing and admitted his program does it, though he says they’re not doing anything illegal.
Graham’s Arizona State Sun Devils are 4-4 and have lost two games in a row. After each of the losses, their opponents talked about having their signs stolen by ASU. That led Washington State head coach Mike Leach, whose Cougars face the Sun Devils on Saturday, to say the Pac-12 should investigate the matter. The conference isn’t investigating, while Graham says his program is not doing anything wrong.
“Do we steal signals? Yeah, we do,” Graham said Tuesday via AZ Central. “Do people steal our signals? Yeah, (they) do. Do you see our signs and all the things we do – it’s our responsibility to make sure our signals are safe. By rule, you can’t video somebody else’s signals. You can’t record their audio, right? That’s it. There’s nothing illegal about that.”
The conference has not received a formal complaint about Arizona State’s actions. It doesn’t sound like they will, either. UCLA head coach Jim Mora doesn’t find anything illegal about it and just says ASU happens to be good at picking opponents’ signs.
Perhaps Leach was just trying to create a distraction ahead of the game between the two. Is there anything wrong with him using mental games?
