Tom Herman can be often seen chewing gum on the sidelines during Texas’ games. Apparently the head coach has a little bit of a nervous habit, as well as an interesting superstition about his gum.
Herman told the media Tuesday that he chews sugar-free Double Bubble. He’s very meticulous about it too and makes sure he has exactly seven pieces in his pocket before the start of each half.

Herman came close to recognizing the gum chewing as a nervous habit.
“I think it’s just kind of — I don’t want to say a nervous habit — but obviously there’s something to that,” Herman said. “The intensity level during a game is pretty high, and that’s something that at least I can kinda unwind a little bit by chewing some gum.”
Another famous coach who is often seen chewing gum on the sidelines is Pete Carroll. Herman has some good company in the gum-chewing club.
