Auburn is reportedly pursuing Will Muschamp to be its next defensive coordinator.
According to Brandon Marcello of AL.com, there is “mutual interest” between Muschamp and Auburn. Muschamp is said to be Auburn coach Gus Malzahn’s top target after Malzahn fired defensive coordinator Ellis Johnson on Sunday.
Auburn gave up 55 points against Alabama in the Iron Bowl and has allowed 30 or more points in six of its last seven games.
While he has compiled a record of just 28-21 in four seasons at Florida, there is no shortage of interest in Muschamp. His work as a defensive coordinator with Auburn and then Texas are what landed him the job at Florida. Muschamp is reportedly considering potential positions at Texas A&M and in the NFL.
It’s worth noting that several Florida players have shown support for Muschamp this season even when things haven’t gone well for the Gators. His record may not be impressive, but he has maintained the respect of his players. Potential employers will love to see that.
