Report: Will Muschamp a candidate for South Carolina job
Will Muschamp is a candidate for the vacant head coaching position at South Carolina, according to a report.
Sources told ESPN.com on Thursday that Muschamp and the Gamecocks have already had informal discussions about the job, with a formal interview likely later in the week. ESPN’s Joe Schad reported that Greg Schiano and Rich Rodriguez are also candidates.
Most of the talk centers around Muschamp, who spent 2015 as Auburn’s defensive coordinator. The former Florida coach has spent 16 of his 20 years in coaching in the SEC and posted a winning record in his four years at Florida, making a Sugar Bowl appearance.
Sources also told ESPN that Muschamp would have been the top choice to take over the South Carolina job had Steve Spurrier retired after 2014, and the Gamecocks also had interest in bringing him on as defensive coordinator under Spurrier this past season, so it seems he may be the leading candidate.
