Report: Anthony Davis will serve as backup tackle, not starting guard for Niners

Anthony-Davis

It has been a strange few days for San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Anthony Davis.

After missing a practice for personal reasons, Davis, who was slated to be the team’s starting right guard, is reportedly going to be the team’s backup right tackle instead, according to Jennifer Chan of Niners Nation. Andrew Tiller will likely start at right guard instead. Davis spent the first part of his career as a tackle, but had been moved to guard throughout the preseason.

It should be made clear that there is not necessarily any link between Davis’s missed practice and the decision. What we do know is that, on Saturday, rumors flew that Davis was on the verge of retiring again, though those reports were quickly disputed. It’s unclear, though, what would have led to the change in the team’s depth chart. Whatever the case, Davis won’t be starting for the Niners on Monday night.
