Archie Manning defends Cam Newton over press conference

Cam Newton may be getting crushed for his listless press conference after losing the Super Bowl to the Denver Broncos on Sunday, but he is getting support from an unlikely source.

Archie Manning, the father of winning quarterback Peyton Manning, defended Newton, pointing out how tough it is to be congenial with the media after losing such a huge game.

“It’s really hard, really, really hard,” Archie told reporters Wednesday, via the Charlotte Observer. “I like Cam. I’m not going to blast Cam. As a parent you say, ‘I wish he’d have handled it a little different.’ But it hurts.”

Archie also pointed out that Peyton got flak for exiting the field after losing the Super Bowl to the New Orleans Saints even though Peyton congratulated some Saints member privately via text message. The former Ole Miss legend did say he hopes and believes Newton learned from the incident. As for Cam, based on his comments this week, we’re not sure he has plans to change.
