Until he gets out on the field and shows otherwise, Baker Mayfield is going to have to live with Johnny Manziel comparisons.
The No. 1 pick of the Cleveland Browns seems to know this, and he has a pretty good response to those who would make such a comparison.
“It’s understandable, obviously,” Mayfield told the MMQB’s Peter King when told that a fan had referred to the quarterback as Manziel 2.0. “First-round picks by the Browns, close to the same size, playmakers … But we’re two completely different people. I care about winning. I care about doing things the right way. I just want to be judged for who I am.”
It’s the best answer Mayfield can offer right now. All that matters is that the Browns aren’t buying those comparisons, and Mayfield seems to understand the expectations he’s facing — and why Manziel failed to meet similar ones. Ultimately, it will come down to whether he can play well enough to disprove these comparisons.
