Baker Mayfield’s second season in the NFL has not gone as many expected, and the quarterback has some regrets over the way he conducted himself at the start of the season.
Mayfield sat down with FOX’s Erin Andrews ahead of the Cleveland Browns’ Thursday Night Football game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. In the interview, Andrews asked Mayfield how it was dealing with all the personalities the Browns had brought in, such as Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham Jr.
Mayfield admitted he regretted being too “laid back”.
“I think I was a little hesitant at first to be myself,” Mayfield said. “I don’t know why. I think that’s where I regret at the beginning not being focused on the details. I was a little more laid back with the on-the-field stuff, just trying to build a relationship instead of saying ‘this is what we’re going to be about, this is what we’re going to do.'”
Mayfield’s behavior is natural. He was only a second-year player and had some new, vocal and more experienced teammates to fit in with. Big personalities don’t always mesh well immediately, and there is often a period where people feel each other out.
Mayfield still isn’t delivering the way he was expected to this season, but his play has improved the past few games. That’s important especially considering how rough things have been for him over the past month.
