Brandon Jacobs: ‘No One’s Your Friend in This Business’

September 3, 2010 by Steve DelVecchio • Comments

Hopefully you didn’t waste an early fantasy pick on Brandon Jacobs.  We already told you how the value of running backs has declined over the past couple seasons from a fantasy football standpoint, so if you took our advice seriously you probably passed on a guy like Jacobs.  If not, you may be in trouble already.

It’s one thing for a running back to fall down the depth chart and maintain a positive attitude about it, vying to work hard and earn the bulk of the carries back.  It’s another when a starter loses his job and immediately sounds off about it.  Jacobs went with the latter and wore his emotions on his sleeve when speaking to reporters after the Giants-Patriots preseason game on Thursday night:

No one’s your friend in this business. This is a cutthroat, backstabbing business. That’s just the way it goes. It’s been like that before me. If you expect anything else out of a business like this, you’re crazy.”

“If I would have stayed making minimum, this wouldn’t be a problem,” Jacobs said. “Once you get paid, you’re always in danger of running into problems like this. It doesn’t matter who you are or what team or organization you play for, that’s just the way it is.”

In summary: Jacobs is pissed about Tom Coughlin’s decision to make Ahmad Bradshaw the No. 1 back.  If he were humble about it, it wouldn’t be a significant concern for Jacobs’ fans and fantasy owners.  Coughlin is a no-b.s. type of head coach.  I can’t imagine he’s going to be happy with the way Jacobs is handling the decision.  Don’t be surprised if he cost himself even more carries with his rant after Thursday’s game.
