Brock Purdy gets enormous new contract extension from 49ers

Mr. Irrelevant has officially now become Mr. Moolah.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported on Friday that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has formally secured a monster new extension from the team. The two sides have reportedly agreed to terms on a new five-year, $265 million contract (with $181 million guaranteed).

Tom Pelissero of NFL Network adds that Purdy’s extension has about $165.1 million guaranteed over the first three seasons and will now take him through the 2030 campaign.

Purdy, 25, now becomes the fifth-highest paid quarterback in the NFL by total value (behind Kansas City’s Patrick Mahomes, Buffalo’s Josh Allen, Cincinnati’s Joe Burrow, and Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence). The contract is a bit more modest when it comes to average annual value ($53 million). By that measure, Purdy is tied with Detroit’s Jared Goff for the seventh-largest figure among QBs.

The former last overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, Purdy has experienced a meteoric rise over the last few years. He took over as the full-time starter in San Francisco during the 2023 season and proceeded to lead the league in passer rating while throwing for 4,280 yards and 31 touchdowns. Purdy also made the Pro Bowl team that year and finished fourth in MVP voting as San Francisco went on to make the Super Bowl as well.

Last season for the 49ers, Purdy took a bit of step back with 3,864 passing yards and 20 passing touchdowns as San Francisco went 6-11 and missed the playoffs (with Purdy offering an interesting explanation for the team’s struggles after the fact). But the 49ers parted ways with several longtime roster mainstays earlier this offseason, seemingly in anticipation of a massive Purdy extension. Now the two sides have officially managed to put pen to paper roughly four months before the start of the 2025 season.
