Report: Browns still deciding between Sam Darnold, Josh Allen for top pick

Sam Darnold

The Cleveland Browns have been on the clock for the 2018 NFL Draft for more than three months now, but head coach Hue Jackson said recently that the team has no idea who they are taking with the top overall pick. According to one report, it will definitely be a quarterback.

Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports has been told that the Browns are trying to decide between Sam Darnold and Josh Allen. While there has been talk that Cleveland could use the No. 1 pick on a player like NC State defensive end Bradley Chubb and wait until No. 4 to take a QB since the draft is so deep at the position, La Canfora says it is looking like the first three picks will all be passers.

I continue to hear the Browns are deciding between Josh Allen or Sam Darnold with the top pick. Everyone I speak to is convinced they are taking a quarterback there, it’s just a matter of which one. If the Giants take a quarterback second overall – which is hardly a sure thing – other teams I spoke to believe Josh Rosen would merit serious consideration there. The Jets at three could be deciding between Allen or Mayfield, and I wouldn’t rule the Heisman Trophy winner out at that spot.

If the Browns have narrowed their decision down to Darnold and Allen, our list of the 10 best QB prospects will tell you we believe they could be making a mistake. Darnold seems like the safer pick as a player who proved he can perform in one of the best conferences in the country, while Allen is being touted as having better physical skills than any prospect in NFL Draft history. Given how many QB draft busts they have already produced, it is essential that the Browns make the right choice.
