Teams calling Browns at trade deadline didn’t know who was in charge

joe-thomasAs ever, the Cleveland Browns remain something of a sideshow, with a new report claiming that teams calling with trade inquiries were left unsure of who was calling the shots within the organization.

The Browns were definitely open for business at the trade deadline, and Joe Thomas and Paul Kruger drew interest around the league. However, teams calling about them weren’t sure who was making the final decisions, according to NFL.com’s Albert Breer.

One team reportedly spoke to general manager Ray Farmer to talk a trade, but Farmer said he had to consult with others within the organization. When talks got serious, other teams found the asking prices “prohibitively high.” One rival executive even referred to the process as “very Cleveland.”

For their part, the Browns simply don’t believe anyone matched their asking price, but outsiders would certainly think the chain of command is a mess and they acted indecisively.

Very Cleveland indeed, and not at all a surprise from what is traditionally one of the most dysfunctional organizations in the NFL.
