Chiefs assistant expecting ‘big jump’ from Damien Williams

Damien Williams

Much has been made of the Kansas City Chiefs making Clyde Edwards-Helaire their first round pick in the NFL Draft, but it’s worth remembering that the team has high hopes for a running back they already had.

Damien Williams remains a potential starter with a chance of getting a big role in the Kansas City offense. Chiefs running backs assistant Deland McCullough is certainly expecting to see much more from the 28-year-old in 2020.

“When he shined, he shined at a level that helped us get over a hump in a few games — and obviously helped us in winning the Super Bowl,” McCullough said of Williams, via Nate Taylor of The Athletic. “Just listening to the way Damien spoke about himself and the things we’re doing and the things he’s going to do to improve, I think his maturation in this offense is going to be a big jump this year.”

Williams had 498 yards and five touchdowns last season, but had a 104-yard game in the Super Bowl with two touchdowns. Edwards-Helaire will push Williams, but it’s clear that both are in Kansas City’s plans.
