Chip Kelly reportedly wants to resurrect Blaine Gabbert’s career
Lots of teams will be looking for quarterbacks high in this year’s NFL Draft, but apparently the San Francisco 49ers will not be one of them.
CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora says that he has been hearing that Chip Kelly is enamored with trying to resurrect Blaine Gabbert’s career. That tidbit suggests the 49ers will head into the season looking to go with Gabbert, who was a failed first-round draft pick with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Gabbert has been with the 49ers since prior to the 2014 season and showed signs of improvement last season. He threw for 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions after taking over the starting job from Colin Kaepernick, who was injured and ineffective.
The Niners went 3-5 under Gabbert, including wins over the Falcons, Rams and an overtime win over the Bears.
Kelly has a big ego and is always out to prove he can do things his way, so this report makes sense. There also has been chatter that he never really wanted Colin Kaepernick as his QB in San Francisco anyhow.
