The Dallas Cowboys are already dealing with injury concerns ahead of Week 1, and this one is at the running back position.
Malik Davis, who was expected to be the backup to Javonte Williams, will be sidelined for some time with what chief operating officer Stephen Jones said is a “pretty serious” injury.
“Unfortunately, I think he’s looking at a pretty serious injury that could take him out for some period of time,” Jones said, via the team website. “We don’t have the final details, we’ll know more, but certainly so disappointed for Malik. Obviously tough for our team, but like anything it’s next man up.”
Davis, 27, is in his fifth season with Dallas. He suffered a hip injury during practice on Friday, just two days before the season opener against the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J.
In 2025, Davis played in 10 games, totaling 52 carries for 250 yards and 2 touchdowns, which were career-bests across the board.
The Cowboys do have some insurance at the position. This offseason, they signed veteran Emari Demercado, who spent the past three seasons with the Arizona Cardinals.
Dallas faces the Washington Commanders in Texas in Week 2, followed by a game against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 3.
The expected move is that Israel Abanikanda will be called up from the practice squad to round out the RB room for now.
