Darren Sharper to be subject to penile arousal testing while on probation

Former NFL safety Darren Sharper was able to reach a plea deal in all of his rape cases that will likely result in him spending less than a decade in prison. While some have argued — and with good reason — that Sharper got off easy, he will hardly be a free man when he is finished serving his sentence.

As part of his plea agreement, Sharper will be required to register as a sex offender and a narcotics offender. During his first three to five years of “freedom,” he will be monitored by GPS at all times. According to The Advocate, the former Pro Bowler will no longer be legally permitted to drink alcohol or go to bars.

And then there’s the penile plethysmograph. We’ll let The Advocate explain what that is:

Sharper will be subject to lie detector tests and, while on lifetime probation in Arizona, to the “penile plethysmograph,” in which a sensor is attached to the penis while an array of sexual images flashes before his eyes, to gauge arousal.

If Sharper violates the terms of his probation, he would be subject to another 14 years in prison. He’ll serve his parole in California for several years, where Sharper will not be committed to travel further than 50 miles from his home unless a state official approves it.

After his parole in California is completed, Sharper will move to Arizona. His neighbors, local school groups and any employers will be made aware of his past crimes, and fliers may be posted describing them. The same rules will apply for Sharper — violate probation and go straight to prison.

Given the heinous nature of some of the crimes Sharper committed, he’s fortunate he’ll ever see the light of day again.
