Report: Dion Lewis out for season with torn ACL

Dion Lewis

The New England Patriots have had the NFL’s best offense through the first half of the season, but they will need to find a way to replace one of their best assets going forward.

Jim McBride of The Boston Globe reports that running back Dion Lewis suffered a torn ACL during Sunday’s win over the Washington Redskins. Lewis fell to the turf after catching a screen pass in the second half, and it immediately looked bad. His left knee bent awkwardly and it was a non-contact injury.

If we told you Lewis was out for the season two months ago, you all would have had the same reaction — who? Lewis, who spent two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles prior to being signed by the Patriots, had not recorded a touch in a regular season game since 2012. The former fifth-round pick emerged as a dangerous weapon for New England and one of Tom Brady’s favorite targets in the short passing game.

No team in the NFL is better at following the “next man up” system, but Lewis will be tough to replace.
