It turns out that Chip Kelly wants his own defensive coordinator.
The San Francisco 49ers have fired defensive coordinator Eric Mangini, according to FOX Sports’s Alex Marvez.
Mangini had just completed his first year as defensive coordinator under former coach Jim Tomsula.
According to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, former Oakland defensive coordinator Jason Tarver is reportedly in “good position” to take over the job.
Just a few days ago, we heard that the team was likely to retain Mangini. However, the Niners proceeded to offer the position to Mike Vrabel, but he refused, leaving Mangini in the awkward position of having a job that the team was suddenly trying to recruit outside candidates to fill. In that aspect, it’s not really a surprise that Mangini found himself out of a job. Running a Chip Kelly defense isn’t really an enviable task, so perhaps he’ll be better off anyway.
