Greg Olsen blasts NFL on player safety after hits to Cam Newton
After witnessing his quarterback, Cam Newton, take multiple dangerous and unpenalized hits to the head in a Week 1 loss to the Denver Broncos, Carolina Panthers tight end Greg Olsen is calling out the NFL on player safety.
Olsen thinks the league is being hypocritical for only talking the talk and not walking the walk when it comes to protecting their players.
“I think any time you talk about player safety, that’s obviously important,” Olsen said, per Bill Voth of Black and Blue Review. “I just don’t think you can talk about player safety and have what unfolded. You can’t talk out of both sides of your mouth.
“Player safety sounds great, is a great offseason rallying cry, sounds awesome,” Olsen continued. “But we got zero yards out of any of those hits. That’s the reality of it.”
The NFL has already been under heavy scrutiny for allowing the several helmet-to-helmet hits on Newton to go uncalled in Thursday’s season opener. Though they admitted fault on at least one of those hits after the fact, the league will continue to face criticism like that of Olsen’s until they begin instituting tangible change with regard to player well-being.
